Andrew Mitchell's First Blog

My name is Andrew Mitchell, and I am a senior at Stockton University. I am excited to be a part of the African American Women and Health Equity course and learn about perspectives I am unfamiliar with.

After my graduation in the Spring, I am planning to pursue a career in management/sales management. I am currently in the interview process for the Sales Management Program at Buckeye International and hope to receive a job offer shortly. I will link the job in the reference section of this post for anyone interested.

I prefer to learn skills/tasks by watching someone complete the task and then attempting to complete the task myself without help or guidance. In contrast, I prefer to learn conceptual information and theories by having in-depth conversations with either those more knowledgeable than myself or people with unique perspectives.

I am hoping to learn a lot from the African American Women and Health Equity course. I specifically want to learn more about the perspectives and experiences of others with backgrounds different from my own. I do not want to be ignorant of the struggles of others in my community, so I want to learn as much as possible. I believe it is important that I try to understand people from all backgrounds so that society can grow closer and feel more united.

When I think of health disparities, I first think of the vast difference between the healthcare available to the rich versus the care available to the lower classes. For example, most of the homeless population and even some of the working class do not have access to yearly health check-ups and dental care which are typically a basic privilege for the middle class and up. Cancer treatments also come to mind. An extremely wealthy individual might have access to 20 different cancer treatments and remedies while the average person only has a couple options to try.

Two important facts about me are that I grew up in Missouri, and I love the outdoors. Growing up in Missouri is an important fact when it comes to understanding me as a person. Even though I've lived in New Jersey for a few years now, I still talk a little differently, and I think I offer different perspectives than those who have lived in New Jersey their whole lives. Loving the outdoors is an important part of who I am because I love to unwind and do various activities outside. During the winter months, I can start to get a little stressed being stuck inside for so long.

Additionally, I am involved on campus through the student senate, fishing club, ping pong club, and Alpha Sigma Phi. I am part of the finance committee in the student senate tasked with the distribution of the student activity fund. I am also the treasurer of my fraternity. I live off campus near the Hamilton Mall which is nice for getting my own room at an affordable price, but I do not enjoy the commute. This is especially true in the mornings.
